The day of independence movement, Samiljeol(삼일절)

Hi! I'm Yu hye-seong, university student of CBNU, Korea.

Today, I will post about certain special day. A day’s name is ‘Samiljeol’. ‘Samil’ mean 3 (Sam) and 1(il). Why name is like that? Samiljeol’s date is 1st, March.
Yes. Samiljeol was named by date. Actually, Samiljeol is the day to praise ancestors who did independence movement.

1st, March, 1919, a lot of people crowded at the park ‘Tapgol’. Not just here, at each province, hundreds, thousands of people crowded at the park or square. It was no matter they are young or old, and male or female. After that, they raised a Korean flag and began shout ‘Daehan doknip mansei!!’ which mean ‘for the independence of Korea.’ And they marched to the road. These Movements are called ‘Samil movement’.

Head to this crowd, Japanese soldiers fired gun and arrested them. Lots of people died and were arrested.

Here was one girl to resist about Japan.
She is ‘Yu gwan soon ’.

Yu gwan soon

When Samil movement is happened, she went to park and led to crowd. And she supplied flags to people and shouted a slogan at the front of the march. In the process of the march, her parents are dead by soldier’s gun and she also is arrested to police. She was confined and was sentenced the punishment of death. That time, she was 18 years old. So Korean often describe her to Jeanne d'Arc. of Franch.

Come back to explanation of Samiljeol. 1st, March was so meaningful day because people could assure themselves we are Korean, not Japanese through the march.

In Samiljeol, the principals of the Executive, the legislature, and the Judicature and descendants of major people who related to movement gathered. And then they praise ancestors’ efforts. At the lots of parks, people act Samil movement.

Samiljeol’s meaning is of condolence and thanks of descendents about ancestors’ numerous efforts. We need to know this true meaning.
